Frozen in Time

Rock formation are created over millions of years, from the perspective of the stone, it is in a constant state of movement and change, from ours, the stone is solid, unyielding and still. As we observe them they appear frozen in time. What I hope to express through my work is how the material can participate in the design, it is a collaboration between myself, the maker, and the steel. My aim is to guide the work into a form while letting it decide the fine details.

This piece captures the movement of the elements in progress, the opposing flat sides and buckling of the layers assume an immense pressure forced upon it, while the slight polish hints towards the heat endured during the formation. These are the two foundational necessities of the formation of metamorphic rock, and the only necessities needed to create my work.

My drawing represent the constant change and movement of the rock, without our observation of them which fixes them into the present, they fold and flow over themselves as would a liquid. These drawings use the same ideals as my forged work, I try to shut my mind off and let the subconscious decision making take place.
